An autoclave (steam steriliser) achieves reliable, validated sterilisation of heat-stable instruments, equipment, media, glassware, and materials using saturated steam at elevated temperature and pressure. Saturated steam at 121°C/15 psi for 15–20 minutes, or 134°C/30 psi for 3–4 minutes, kills all vegetative organisms, spores, viruses, and fungi - achieving sterility assurance levels (SAL) of 10^-6.
